Hexagram 13: Fellowship (同人) & Tzolkin
Hexagram 13 Fellowship (同人 Tóng Rén) in I Ching and Tzolkin: Heaven over Fire, unity amid difference. It maps to kins 49–52 — the seals of Love and Free Will.
同人 tóng rén · Fellowship
Fellowship (同人, Tóng Rén) pairs Heaven above Fire: a wide, open blaze visible from every side. The judgment speaks of fellowship with others in the open, of success and the benefit of crossing the great water — a shared undertaking that unites people across their differences. The image calls for organizing clans and drawing distinctions between things: true unity does not erase identity, it orders diversity.
In the Argüelles Codon system, hexagram 13 corresponds to kins 49–52 of the Tzolkin: Red Moon (Universal Water, tone 10), purifying relationship, White Dog (Love, tone 11) — the seal of loyalty and bonding, Blue Monkey (Play, tone 12), building connection through shared play, and Yellow Human (Free Will, tone 13), closing the wavespell by choosing one’s own path within the group. Dog and Human resonate especially with the hexagram’s theme: love binds, and free will does not disappear in the process.
Both traditions describe the same paradox of fellowship here: strength comes not from sameness but from loyalty between distinct beings — a lens, not proof.
The Judgment
Fellowship with others in the open. Success. It furthers one to cross the great water. True community is built on shared vision and openness.
The Image
Heaven together with fire: the image of Fellowship. The superior person organizes the clans and makes distinctions between things.
