Hexagram 15: Modesty (謙) & Tzolkin
Hexagram 15 Modesty (謙 Qiān) in I Ching and Tzolkin: Earth over Mountain, strength held in reserve. Maps to kins 57–60 of the Tzolkin calendar — a motif of quiet power and balance.
謙 qiān · Modesty
Modesty (謙, Qiān) is the hexagram of Earth above Mountain: a single strong yang line held within, surrounded entirely by yielding yin lines. The Judgment states plainly that modesty creates success and the superior person carries things through; the image of a mountain buried inside the earth calls for reducing what is excessive and augmenting what is too little — great strength kept in reserve, not on display.
In the Argüelles Codon system, hexagram 15 corresponds to kins 57–60 of the Tzolkin calendar: Red Earth (Navigation, tone 5), White Mirror (Endlessness, tone 6), Blue Storm (Self-Generation, tone 7), and Yellow Sun (Universal Fire, tone 8). Navigation without fanfare, a mirror that reflects without asserting itself, a storm generated quietly from within, and a sun that warms without blinding — all four trace the same pattern: power held in silent reserve, ready to act only when truly needed.
Set side by side, both traditions point toward a shared intuition: real strength need not announce itself to be effective — this is a lens, not a proven equivalence.
The Judgment
Modesty creates success. The superior person carries things through. Mountains within the earth — great strength held in reserve through humility.
The Image
Within the earth, a mountain. The superior person reduces that which is too much and augments that which is too little.
