Hexagram 29: The Abysmal (坎) & Tzolkin

Hexagram 29 The Abysmal (坎 Kǎn) in I Ching and Tzolkin: Water over Water, danger overcome through sincerity. It maps to kins 113–116 — exploration and vision.

坎 kǎn · The Abysmal

The Abysmal (坎, Kǎn) is the hexagram of repeated danger — Water over Water, two identical trigrams flowing one into the other. It does not avoid the chasm; it teaches how to cross it: with sincerity, like water that always finds its way, filling every hollow before moving on.

In the Argüelles Codon system, hexagram 29 corresponds to kins 113–116 of the Tzolkin calendar: Red Skywalker (Exploration, tone 9), White Wizard (Timelessness, tone 10), Blue Eagle (Vision, tone 11), and Yellow Warrior (Intelligence, tone 12). This quartet of signatures traces successive stages of passing through the unknown: exploring the abyss, timeless trust, an eagle’s-eye view of the way out, and finally fearless, intelligent action — the very arc The Abysmal asks one to walk step by step.

Set side by side, both traditions say the same thing: repeated danger is not a punishment but a school — and only sincerity and clear sight carry one through without losing direction.

The Judgment

The Abysmal repeated. If you are sincere, you have success in your heart, and whatever you do succeeds. Navigate danger with sincerity — like water, find your way through.
