Hexagram 39: Obstruction (蹇) & Tzolkin
Hexagram 39 Obstruction (蹇 Jiǎn) in I Ching and Tzolkin: Water over Mountain, a blocked path and turn inward. It maps to kins 153–156 of the Yellow Seed wavespell.
蹇 jiǎn · Obstruction
Obstruction (蹇, Jiǎn) is the hexagram of a blocked path — Water piled up over a Mountain, danger waiting ahead of an obstacle not yet crossed. The southwest furthers, the northeast does not: rather than force the crossing, the hexagram counsels turning inward and seeking counsel from someone who has already made the passage.
In the Argüelles Codon system, hexagram 39 corresponds to kins 153–156 of the Tzolkin calendar — the final four tones (10–13: Planetary, Spectral, Crystal, Cosmic) of the Yellow Seed wavespell. This run of seals — Skywalker (Exploration), Wizard (Timelessness), Eagle (Vision), Warrior (Intelligence) — closes the thirteen-day wave just before the next one opens. As in the hexagram, this is a late-cycle moment where exploration meets its edge and must turn toward inward vision before advancing further.
Set side by side, both traditions say the same thing: an obstacle late in the journey is not failure but a signal to finish what was begun before the cycle opens anew.
The Judgment
Obstruction. The southwest furthers. The northeast does not further. It furthers one to see the great person. When the path is blocked, turn inward and seek counsel.
The Image
Water on the mountain. The superior person turns their attention to themselves and molds their character.
