Hexagram 55: Abundance (豐) & Tzolkin

Hexagram 55 Abundance (豐 Fēng) in I Ching and Tzolkin: Thunder over Fire, peak fullness. It maps to kins 217–220 — tones 9–12, the Sun seal echoing the judgment's noon sun.

豐 fēng · Abundance

Abundance (豐, Fēng) pairs Thunder above Fire — motion and instant illumination together, an image of a peak moment when everything is visible. The judgment calls for celebrating fullness while remembering that after the zenith comes decline: the king attains abundance, yet wisdom lies in not grieving over the dusk that follows. The image — thunder and lightning arriving together — has the superior person decide lawsuits and carry out punishments while everything stands as clear as at midday.

In the Argüelles Codon system, hexagram 55 corresponds to kins 217–220 of the Tzolkin calendar — the last four seals of the twenty-sign cycle, tones 9–12 (Solar, Planetary, Spectral, Crystal). Red Earth (Navigation) opens this quartet with a question of direction, White Mirror (Endlessness) and Blue Storm (Self-Generation) carry it through reflection and transformation, and Yellow Sun (Universal Fire) closes it out — a seal that almost literally repeats the judgment’s image of “the sun at midday.” The Storm of kin 219 resonates directly with the thunder and lightning of the upper trigram.

Both traditions read this point in a similar way: it is a moment of maximum illumination and power, after which change must follow — not a warning, but a reminder that a peak is a moment, not a permanent state.

The Judgment

Abundance has success. The king attains abundance. Be not sad; be like the sun at midday. Fullness is a peak moment — celebrate but know that decline follows.

The Image

Both thunder and lightning come. The superior person decides lawsuits and carries out punishments.
