Hexagram 8: Holding Together (比) & Tzolkin

Hexagram 8 Holding Together (比 Bǐ) in I Ching and Tzolkin: Water over Earth, unity and loyalty. It maps to kins 29–32 of the Tzolkin calendar.

比 bǐ · Holding Together

Holding Together (比, Bǐ) is the hexagram of cohesion — Water above Earth, an element that fills every low place of the ground. The oracle counsels asking once more whether one possesses sublimity, constancy, and perseverance needed to bind lastingly with others. The image speaks of the kings of antiquity, who granted lands as fiefs and cultivated friendly relations — unity as a deliberate choice, not an accident.

In the Argüelles Codon system, hexagram 8 corresponds to kins 29–32 of the Tzolkin calendar. Kin 29, Red Moon under the seal of Universal Water (tone 3), opens this quartet with a flowing element, an echo of the Earth receiving the hexagram’s water. White Dog (kin 30, Love, tone 4) brings loyalty, Blue Monkey (kin 31, Play, tone 5) a lightness of bonding, and Yellow Human (kin 32, Free Will, tone 6) closes the group with a conscious choice of belonging, echoing the oracle’s question about sincerity.

Read side by side, both traditions say the same thing: lasting unity is chosen again and again, in freedom and honesty toward others. This is a bridge, not a proof — a lens on a shared shade of relationship.

The Judgment

Holding Together brings good fortune. Inquire of the oracle once more whether you possess sublimity, constancy, and perseverance; then there is no blame.
