Hexagram 18: Work on the Decayed (蠱) & Tzolkin
Hexagram 18 Work on the Decayed (蠱 gǔ) in I Ching and Tzolkin: Mountain over Wind, correcting decay. It maps to kins 69–72 — a sequence of purification and renewal.
蠱 gǔ · Work on the Decayed
Work on the Decayed (蠱, gǔ) is the hexagram of correction — Mountain resting above Wind, an image of decay that must be addressed before it spreads further. Wind blows low along the mountainside, stirring what has stagnated; the superior person rouses the people from their torpor and strengthens their spirit. Work on what has spoiled has supreme success — it furthers one to dare crossing the great water, counting the days before and after the turning point.
In the Argüelles Codon system, hexagram 18 corresponds to kins 69–72 of the Tzolkin calendar: four consecutive signatures moving through the seals of Red Moon (universal water, tone 4), White Dog (love, tone 5), Blue Monkey (play, tone 6), and Yellow Human (free will, tone 7). Just as the I Ching calls for cleansing what has spoiled before it spreads, this stretch of the cycle moves from purifying water, through loyal love and playful ease, to conscious choice — a sequence of renewal rather than one single act of repair.
Set side by side, both traditions point to the same mechanism: what has been neglected does not mend itself — it takes a series of deliberate steps, spread over time, before it can be reborn in a new form. This is a bridge, not a proof: a sequence of correspondences offered as a lens for reflection, not an established doctrine.
