Hexagram 43: Breakthrough (夬) & Tzolkin
Hexagram 43 Breakthrough (夬 Guài) in I Ching and Tzolkin: Lake over Heaven, resolute truth-telling. It maps to kins 169–172 — a wavespell closing on tone 13 and opening anew on tone 1.
夬 guài · Breakthrough
Breakthrough (夬, Guài) is the hexagram of resolute reckoning — five yang lines rise from the base, pressing a single yin line out at the very top. The lake has risen all the way to heaven, waters gathered so high they must spill over. The judgment calls for the matter to be made known openly, at the king’s court — resolute action dispels what is negative before it can take hold.
In the Argüelles Codon system, hexagram 43 corresponds to kins 169–172 of the Tzolkin calendar. Kin 169, Red Moon (tone 13), closes the prior wavespell. Right after, a new one opens: kin 170 White Dog (tone 1) brings the unifying purpose of love, kin 171 Blue Monkey (tone 2) polarizes play, and kin 172 Yellow Human (tone 3) activates free will. Closing on tone 13 and opening at once on tone 1 mirrors the hexagram’s breakthrough: an ending that becomes a beginning immediately.
Set side by side, both traditions point to the same threshold: resolute truth closes one stage and at once opens the next — a bridge, not a proven doctrine.
The Judgment
Breakthrough. One must resolutely make the matter known at the court of the king. It must be announced truthfully. Resolute action dispels negativity — speak truth to power.
The Image
The lake has risen up to heaven. The superior person dispenses riches downward and refrains from resting on virtue.
