Hexagram 57: The Gentle (巽) & Tzolkin

Hexagram 57 The Gentle (巽 Xùn) in I Ching and Tzolkin: Wind over Wind, influence achieved through small steps. It maps to kins 225–228, from Serpent to Star.

巽 xùn · The Gentle

The Gentle (巽, Xùn) is the hexagram of doubled wind — Wind upon Wind, the same trigram repeated. Wind forces nothing directly: it slips through gaps and circles obstacles until it reaches its goal. The Judgment speaks of success through what is small — a gentle but persistent influence penetrating everywhere force would break. The image, winds following one upon the other, calls for gradual, wave-like action.

In the Argüelles Codon system, hexagram 57 corresponds to kins 225–228 of the Tzolkin calendar: Red Serpent (Life Force, Self-Existing tone), White Worldbridger (Death, Overtone), Blue Hand (Accomplishment, Rhythmic tone), and Yellow Star (Elegance, Resonant tone). The raw vital energy of the Serpent passes through the dissolving of old form and the concrete action of the Hand, then ripens into the polish of the Star — a transformation as gradual as the Judgment’s wind.

Set side by side, both traditions point to the same mechanism: lasting influence rarely comes from a single breakthrough, more often from small, consistent steps. This is a bridge, not a proof — the Tzolkin does not “confirm” the I Ching, but reads the same stretch of time through a kindred metaphor of gentle change.

The Judgment

The Gentle. Success through what is small. It furthers one to have somewhere to go. It furthers one to see the great person. Gentle but persistent influence penetrates everywhere.

The Image

Winds following one upon the other. The superior person spreads their commands abroad and carries out their undertakings.
